Budget-Friendly Canned Spiced Honey Bourbon Pears

Description

A cheap, one-person dessert made with canned pears, bourbon, honey, and warm spices. Ready in 15 minutes, this stovetop recipe transforms pantry staples into a luxurious, comforting treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15.25 oz / 432g) canned pear halves in light syrup, drained and patted dry
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon whiskey
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest (optional)

Instructions

  1. Drain the canned pears in a colander and pat them dry with a paper towel to remove excess syrup. Cut halves in half if desired.
  2. Place a small saucepan over medium-low heat and add the butter. Melt slowly until foamy but not browned.
  3. Add the honey and bourbon to the melted butter. Whisk gently until the honey is fully dissolved and the mixture is shiny and amber-colored.
  4. Remove the pan from heat briefly and stir in the cinnamon and cloves to bloom the spices.
  5. Return the pan to medium-low heat. Add the drained pears and toss to coat them in the sauce.
  6. Simmer gently for 7-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pears are tender and the sauce has thickened slightly.
  7. Remove from heat. Stir in orange zest if using. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice as needed.
  8. Serve warm immediately.

Notes

Do not rush the simmer; low heat allows the pears to absorb the sauce without boiling off the bourbon flavor. Patting the pears dry is crucial to prevent a watery sauce. If the sauce is too thin, simmer longer or add a cornstarch slurry. If too sweet, add a squeeze of lemon juice. This recipe is naturally gluten-free, but check bourbon labels if you have celiac disease.
